Rocky Top String Band launch Tall pines in Balla, 16 Aug. 2013


Thanks to Tommy Lyons for the news that the Rocky Top String Band of Co. Mayo will launch their new album Tall pines with an evening of music in Mannion's, Balla, Co. Mayo, this coming Friday (16 August).

The Rocky Tops comprise (above, l-r) John Flatley (bass) from the Partry Mountains; Rob Thornburgh (fiddle) from Carracanada, Swinford, by way of Boone, North Carolina; Sarah MacEvilly (vocals, autoharp) from Killawalla; Tommy Lyons (banjo and mandolin) from Prizon, Balla; and Hubie MacEvilly (vocals, guitar), Sarah's brother.

The band have taken part in all seven Westport Folk and Bluegrass Festivals to date, with a powerful and danceable mix of bluegrass classics from Bill Monroe, the Stanley Bros, Del McCoury, Flatt & Scruggs, Jimmy Martin, together with Carter Family songs and other music from the old-timey era. Mannion's hosts bluegrass events throughout the year, culminating with the 5th Balla Bluegrass Festival, which will be held on 25-28 October 2013.
