Early in the spring, late in the fall: new release from Meitheal
Thanks to Vicky Langan in Cork for news of Early in the spring, late in the fall, the first recording by the group Meitheal. The three members (Vicky, voice and fiddle; Mike Gangloff (USA), voice and fiddle; David Colohan, voice, harmonium, and shruti box) met in March last year (see the BIB for 18 Feb. 2012).
Early in the spring, late in the fall, released on Fort Evil Fruit, comprises three tracks totalling just over half an hour's playing time. Meitheal's music merges texts and harmonies from the Sacred Harp tradition with old-time fiddle music and drone improvisation, using what Bill Monroe might have called 'the ancient tones'. More details are here, with audio and video links.
Labels: Old-time, On the edge, Recordings, Sacred Harp
