Clawhammer banjo teachers in Dublin/Bray?
Brendan McCarthy is looking for clawhammer banjo lessons in Dublin or Bray. Brendan is on Google +, but we have no e-mail address for him. We suggest that he should drop in at the regular old-time music sessions at Hannan's in James's St. on Friday night from 10.00 p.m., and at the Cobblestone in Smithfield on Saturday evenings from about 4.30 to 7.00 p.m., and ask the banjo players there.
The gold standard in clawhammer banjo playing in this island is set by Bill Whelan, shown above at the Cobblestone in a photo from an article on the Journal of Music website; other musicians in the picture include Liam Kennedy, mandolin; Ben Keogh, guitar; and Dermy Diamond, fiddle. The author, Ciaran Carson, has allowed his regard for old-time music to put him off bluegrass banjo - but no one's perfect...
