Earl Scruggs: updates

The BIB editor reports:

Obituaries of Earl Scruggs in the UK press have not yet added anything to the best American reports. The Daily Telegraph obituary, from today's print edition, can be seen online. The Guardian online obituary has the advantage of a magnificent embedded video from the 1971 Camp Springs Bluegrass Festival, which can be seen direct on YouTube.

In the video, Earl Scruggs - looking young and fit at 47 - leads a jam on 'Foggy Mountain Breakdown' with banjo-players from the other bands taking part in the festival, including Sonny Osborne, Bill Emerson, J.D. Crowe, Don Stover, and Alan Munde. Also visible are the late Carlton Haney, Jimmy Martin, and Charlie Waller. Don't, on any account, miss the look on Sonny Osborne's face when Earl winds up the jam by going into the high break.

PS: Thanks to Bluegrass on the Tube for this list, with links, of videos under Earl's name. He can also be seen in several videos under the names of other members of the Flatt & Scruggs band.

Update 31 Mar.: Tributes to Earl from the distinguished roster of teachers at the ArtistWorks Academy of Bluegrass can be read here.
