...You have to study black music. Back in the 1930s and '40s, Monroe was aware of the dynamics of black music, and he was able to cross genres. If we're going to translate the paradigm 60 years later, it's no longer blues; it's rapping and beatboxing. You have to understand the groove, the intensity, the sexual edge of contemporary black music to play bluegrass music right.
