The Bluegrass Ireland Blog

The editor officially retired from bluegrass blogging as from 15 February 2013. The most active medium on bluegrass in Ireland is now Ray O'Brien's 'Bluegrass in Ireland' Facebook page. The BIB calendar, its most central function, remains active and occasional news digests are published. Send in news for the calendar by e-mail, and please add a copy to Ray O'Brien.

The resources already on the BIB, including archives and links, remain accessible and may be improved for the convenience of readers. The BIB's background and purpose are explained here, and tips on using it are here. To reach both, click on the 'Welcome' label below.

Great job Richard,

I found the site from a link on Twotimepolka.com.
I have been looking for a way of finding bluegrass and/or mandolin gigs in Ireland, my prayers are answered.

Is there an e-mail address to send gig information to?

Regards,
Sonny

Hi, Sonny,

Glad to be of service! Yes: you can e-mail gig information to me via the link 'The editor', near the end of the set of links on the right-hand side of the BIB. All the best, and I look forward to hearing from you,

Richard Hawkins

GO! GO! GO! See the Tennessee Hennessees as soon as possible. These guys are great, a little unhinged maybe, but they can't help it if they're crazy! Great playing and singing, and a fresh selection of material make these guys an act to be enjoyed by many.
If you haven't seen the T. Hennessees, go out of your way to do so. I will the next time I'm in Ireland!

Hi Richard, I can't quite figure out another way to reach you. Your blog is great, and I see that you are interested in the same music as I am - I am buddies with Foghorn Stringband and the Stairwell Sisters, and was in the Flat Mountain Girls until we recently disbanded. I wanted to let you know that my bluegrass band, Whiskey Puppy, is touring the Netherlands in March. Would you be willing to post about our tour on your blog? Details are on our website: www.whiskeypuppy.com or myspace.com/whiskeypuppymusic. I also just set up a blog ... I think... at www.whiskeypuppyinthenetherlands@blogspot.com

... with details there. Or email me at rachelgold145@gmail.com

Thanks!!!!

Hello Richard,
I thought you might like to know that I filmed these two American Old Time musicians in The Curfew Tower in Cushendall, in the Glens of Antrim, just last Friday night.

I must say, it was great to have real LIVE musicians to listen to, for a change!

Anyway, I've pasted the links to the YouTubes below, just in case you & your readers fancy checking them out.

Cheers

Hi Richard,

Thought you might like to know I'm working on an 'Old Time Blog' as an extension of the Old Time Forum.

At the moment it is just work in progress.

Hi Richard,

Here's another site I've put together, which may interest Irish Old Time Musicians.

'Old Time Musicians of Europe':
http://europeanoldtimers.ning.com/

It's early days, but it looks like it could provide a fun way for 'Old Timers' to network.

Cheers

Maybe even post on/follow/link to it.

Thanks!

Hi, Maeve,

Sorry, but the BIB does not carry links to sites (or news about topics) that are not connected with bluegrass, old-time, or related music. Not even the editor's favourite 'other' subjects get a look in.

All good wishes,

Richard

Hello there from Australia - I am a friend of the Simpson family (Bluestack Mountain Boys) and the late David Simpson introduced myself and my husband to bluegrass. What a great privilege! We are set dancers and I have started doing some sean-nos dancing to great bluegrass rhythms.
I attach a short dance clip with music from Uncle Earl (they have featured this on their FaceBook page).
Enjoy!

I work for Tour America and have just come back from an educational trip to Kentucky. It included a visit to Bill Monroe's homeplace and the Bluegrass Music Museum in Owensboro. Do you think there would be much of a market in Ireland for a package to the centenary festival or ROMP concert in the Autumn?
Thanks

For Hapi, whose message with a link to his advice on choosing titles for blog posts was published yesterday: thanks again, and your suggestion is appreciated. However, on reconsideration I've deleted the message and link, as they are not related to the purpose of this blog.

Alway read your blog, find it the only way to keep tabs on what is happing in Ireland on the bluegrass front. I would have missed some great acts only for this blog. Keep up the great work and look forward to seeing you soon again

Well, the BIB is (as you see) still here, for the time being; but it has never carried more than a handful of items on Celtic music. The news from Jonathan Toman that appeared on 6 April was published because a notable member of the bluegrass community in Ireland happened to have produced a fine piece of 5-string playing in a different vein.
